UWNL is proud to report that in 2023 we funded the Canadian Mental Health Association (NL) with $45,000!

Program: “Train The Trainer”

“This project aims to train individuals to deliver our four most requested course offerings (Mental Health First Aid, Mental Health First Aid for youth, safeTalk and Applied Suicide Intervention training -ASIST) to increase our capacity to serve the community by having more mental health facilitators.”

Through the program “Train the Trainer” CMHA-NL has expanded the number of certified facilitators for mental health training. By being able to increase the quantity of sessions across the province, CMHA-NL has engaged with and educated a range of people and organizations. This has brought further awareness to the need for mental health education and prompted a growth in participation and interest, which CMHA-NL is responding to with an effort to expand our impact in all regions.

Kids Eat Smart

Kids Eat Smart NL

UWNL is proud to report that in 2023 we funded this program with $9,450!

“Kids Eat Smart Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador partners with schools, communities, volunteers and sponsors to set up and support nutritious food programs called Kids Eat Smart Clubs, organized by volunteers for school age children throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Our vision is that every school age child in Newfoundland and Labrador has access to food at school at no cost to families.”

Kids Eat Smart Clubs are so important – they are supporting families and children including those most vulnerable, by providing access to nutritious food, at no cost to families. Every school day, we serve over 40,000 meals in our 275 Kids Eat Smart Clubs, serving over 5.4 million meals each year.

Our Kids Eat Smart Clubs are improving the health, welfare, and well-being of our school age children. Having access to healthy food at school will improve the health and wellbeing of our children, and they will do better in school. And, if they do better in school, they will have a brighter future.

Easter Seals

UWNL funded Easter Seals NL with $5,000 for their “Update Equipment for ESNL Accessible Climbing” program. This funding falls under UWNL’s focus area “All That Kids Can Be”.

Easter Seals NL’s Accessible Climbing program helped participants of all ages with disabilities to reach their physical activity goals through wall climbing in 2023. With new equipment available to participants through the United Way NL Community Fund, more participants were able to safely attend the program. One participant said the following of the impact the climbing program had on her: “Climbing helps me reach new heights and do a level of activity I never thought was possible. Through the ascender system, I am able to use my arms to to push myself to reach the top. Each week I strive to go a little higher then previous weeks.”

Association for New Canadians

UWNL is proud to have funded this program with $7,500 for their “Summer Enrichment” Program. This funding falls under UWNL’s focus area “All That Kids Can Be”.

This program will provide newcomer youth with organized classroom and extracurricular activities designed to enhance their linguistic, academic and social competencies. Through a holistic learning approach that incorporates in-class, instructor-based homework assistance as well as peer-to-peer support, the Summer Enrichment Program offers an excellent
opportunity to provide a high-need, multi-barriered cohort with programming that will strengthen their overall academic competencies.

The Association for New Canadians (ANC) is a
non-profit, community-based organization
delivering settlement and integration services to immigrants and refugees in Newfoundland and Labrador. For more than 40 years, the Association has delivered programs and services that support all aspects of immigrant integration, ranging from settlement information and orientation to language
learning, skills development and employment. The mission of the Association for New Canadians is to settle and integrate immigrants, and to empower them with the skills, knowledge and information necessary to become independent, contributing
members of the community and country.

Kilbride to Ferryland Resource Coalition

UWNL provided $10,800 in funding for the Coalition’s “Community Garden” program. The funding is provided under UWNL’s “All That Kids Can Be” focus area.

“As an organization, we are focused on promoting healthy, active living in the communities that we serve. A community garden where our participants have access to land in which they can grow their own food fits our mandate in that it provides education to all involved, from children, parents, and grandparents. A community garden would also be a place for educating the public about waste management. Through the use of composting, families involved will be able to get rid of organic materials by composting them on site, thus lowering the amount of household waste. Children from a young age, along with their families, will learn about the benefits of composting for the larger community, and how it benefits by providing nutrients to growing plants.” Tara Madigan – Executive Director
